The name Tampaksiring comes from two Balinese words, namely "tampak" and "siring", which respectively mean palm and slant. It is said that, according to a legend recorded on Usana Bali palm leaves, the name comes from the footprints of a king named Mayadenawa. This king was clever and powerful, but unfortunately he had a very angry nature.
He considered himself a god and ordered his people to worship him. As a result of Mayadenawa's behavior, Batara Indra was angry and sent his troops. Mayadenawa ran into the forest. So that his pursuers lose track of him, he walks with his feet tilted. That way, he hoped that his pursuers would not recognize his footprints.
However, he can also be caught by his pursuers. Previously, he managed to create a poisonous spring with his remaining supernatural powers which caused the deaths of many of his pursuers after they drank the water from the spring. Batara Indra then created another spring as an antidote to the poisoned water which was later named "Tirta Empul" ("holy water"). The forest area through which King Mayadenawa walked while tilting his feet is known as Tampaksiring.
